Optifine helps a lot, adds more options to reduce lag. Adding more ram kind of helps(check with pats) Of course, having a decent computer helps
To Turn on VBOs go to options and hit video settings. Then find VBOs and turn it on. For Optifine: Go to optifine.org when you get to that website a section is called Download click on that. Then whencyou click on that click on a 1.8 version of optifine then hit download. After download open it. Once it opens there should be a wizard for it. Say yes to the questions hit finish and then open minecraft. When minecraft is open there is a profile called optifine click on that. Then hit play and your done!
VBOs are actually quite an improvement, provided that your graphics card supports it natively and does not emulate it.
