The job of the vote system is not to say who will be our next moderators, but instead it serves us, the staff team, as a guideline as to whom we should pick. We still apply the democratic principles in most cases, but we reserve the right to pick candidates that we think are better fit for staff in some cases. I know this might sound very non-democratic to you, because after all, it is, however it is for the better (before you angrily shout dictatorship, let me explain). The people making the decision have been staff for months, if not years. They know what it takes to become staff and, more importantly, succeed at being staff. This was the motto this mod noms, dedication and no Ima quit after 1 month type staff.

Furthermore about this being a business; it is a business, however we don't opt for profit (we don't take the money for ourselves) but we try to make the server as enjoyable as possible. This sometimes means that we need to decide on difficult problems, and more than often somebody will be pissed. That is sadly unavoidable, as it is rare to find cases where all people agree, but we try our best to find compromises.

Moreover, we need to factor in another aspect in our decisions; which solutions will bring the server forward the most. This is difficult to do for obvious reasons, but we really try our best to balance it out.

If you people would feel more fairly treated, we could of course remove the voting system; however this would leave us without a guideline and would probably be even more difficult to please everybody; I also feel like most people would rather have some say in who gets staff (because frankly, they do, we really respect the voting results and don't ignore them like you may perceive) than just have us decide some.

Finally, let me tell you this. Most of you don't know what it is like to be staff; those who do will probably understand the following. Being staff is hard. Really hard. Most of the players just take it all for granted, but it has to come from somewhere. Staff is responsible for maintaining a state of relative peace; thanks to them the server is not in total chaos but playable. Thanks to them, the server is moving forward, new content is being added. Thanks to them; this server actually exists; both community and staff are essential, without them a server is nothing. Staff are the glue that is holding the server together, and they rarely get thanked, but instead mostly criticized. This is really what makes staff slower. If they get the constant negative feedback, they will eventually blame themselves, tell themselves they can't help the server and end up doing nothing and/or quitting. This is for obvious reasons bad. So please, whenever you criticize staff; feel free to do so, we appreciate constructive criticism, but also keep in mind the effect that you might be causing.

PS: Ubuntu, the new forum font is awesome, all memes are cancerous and the all people posting offtopic posts after this one can enjoy one week of free forum vacation.

I don't think the ppl calling it drama truly get the point that was being made. But Hey its there server, I love the place and am glad to be here, regardless of how its said or implied or meant to be perceived as, each one of these servers is a business, plain and simple, I get that. What alkaline says is true though, communication to make sure that as ppl are calling it "Drama" is addressed and everyone that contributes to this business's concerns are taken care of. One staff may say this but another puts it this way, everyone assumes this is how this situation is being handled, but then its not, What im thinking I'm understanding from this is that apparently Gleba was actually already known then? I don't know, trying to keep the point here as mature and understanding as possible that doesn't disrespect. If you haven't notice from my post's, I'm big on the respect factor. So please don't disrespect it by calling it drama. Its blunt, but with no corners cut, str8 up. Thanks.

This is a key point. Everybody always assumes things about staff; most of them are actually quite wrong or at least severely biased.

We use democratic principles for deciding on staff members. A majority of the votes were for former staff, so a majority of the places went to former staff, which I described as a democracy. But we cannot have a full-fledged democracy; it's important that staff have the deciding say because we need to do what's best for the server on the grounds of suitability, as opposed to relying on a vote which always shows elements of a popularity contest (although we've tried to reduce this).

Another principle is that you have to please as many people as you can but you can never please everyone. We've had to accept that.
    • Last time, apps & noms lasted a week each, where we spent most of the time just waiting for a deadline when everyone had already applied / voted. We reduced this time, and now some people say we were too quick (despite all applications being submitted within the first few days and most of the votes coming in within 24 hours of the poll being released). Where's the middle-ground?
    • Some users are against us 'recycling' staff. Yet some people say we should've followed the vote, despite former staff getting the most votes. How are we meant to deal with split opinions by people who haven't thought through their arguments? We tried to deal with it: 2 places went to former staff, and 1 place was given to a fresh-face. I fail to see how our decision can be described as confusing or unjust.
Cast your minds back 3/4 years: there were no mod elections. We now do mod elections so that everyone has a fairer chance. What are we supposed to do: abandon the idea of mod elections in the first place, and go back to the old days?

We all need to respect that staff acted justly under the circumstances: huge pressure to select fresh staff, but a vote which wanted former staff. We all choose to play on this server; we should respect its rules and customs (although a number of people who started this argument barely come online as it is).

This topic is getting hugely out-of-hand & off-topic. If any of you still refuse to accept the means by which we made our decision, message me on skype or post on my wall. But I advise you against extending this argument even further, because you won't win it.

    Discussion locked.

Don't worry, Gleba, we have nothing against you at all, and you were chosen fairly; your application hit the nail on the head, and you seemed like the perfect new member to the staff team. At the end of the day, BC is still here, players still come on, and you are a moderator and no one can change it. Yes, it may take the community some time to ease up to this whole thing but trust me, everything will work out! Congratulations on being a new member to the staff team :d
