Like Kash said, this sounds like a virus problem and an update to 1.8 will not fix it.

If it was running fine before, then it most likely means virus, so GameBooster won't help here.

How to clean for viruses:
The thing is, most Antiviruses come with okay virus scanners, however, in my opinion, Malwarebytes gets rid of the worst.

1) Download Malwarebytes here -> https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/
2) Run the downloaded file
3) Click "Yes" to the User Account Control window.
4) In the Setup window, press Ok.
5) Press Next
6) Tick "I Accept the Agreement" and click Next
7) Click Next again.
8) Click Next once again.
9) Click Next again.
10) Click Next again.
11) Click Install
12) When it is done installing, UNCHECK "ENABLE FREE TRIAL OF MALAWAREBYTES"
13) When Malawarebytes opens, click "Scan Now" in the bottom right corner of the window.
14) Leave your computer alone until the scan is completed.
15) I personally don't have any viruses so I'm not too sure what appears if you do, but it should be fairly straightforward.

It displays a list of PUPs and malware, but Ive only seen PUPs on mine.
